The short version
- Tyler sits on US 69 and US 271 just south of I-20, so Tyler fleets run I-20 between Dallas and Shreveport as well as north-south routes through the Piney Woods.
- Timber is a major East Texas freight. Texas A&M Forest Service put the delivered value of the 2023 East Texas timber harvest at $821.1 million, with 1.8 billion board feet of sawlogs.
- Smith County is in Railroad Commission District 06. The Haynesville Shale counties, including Gregg, Rusk, Harrison and Panola, are just east of Tyler.
- Narrow rural roads, logging-road entrances and deer make run-off-road and animal-strike losses common for East Texas trucks.
Tyler’s highway network
I-20 crosses northern Smith County, linking Tyler to Dallas about 100 miles west and to Longview and Shreveport to the east. Through the city, US 69 runs north toward Mineola and Greenville and south toward Jacksonville and Lufkin, and US 271 runs northeast toward Gilmer and Mount Pleasant. Loop 323 circles the city, and Toll 49 runs around its west and south sides.
A Tyler trucking company typically does some of each: I-20 runs to DFW and Louisiana, and regional work on two-lane highways through pine forest. Underwriters care about that mix. See what is radius in truck insurance.
Timber and log hauling
Texas A&M Forest Service's Harvest Trends 2023 report (published May 2025) gives the scale of the timber economy around Tyler:
| Measure | 2023 figure |
|---|---|
| Delivered value of timber harvest | $821.1 million |
| Stumpage value | $370.3 million |
| Sawlog harvest | 1.8 billion board feet |
| Pulpwood and pellet roundwood harvest | 2.9 million cords |
| East Texas counties where wood is a top-five manufacturing employer | 33 of 43 |
Log trucks are their own class
Logging and log hauling are rated separately from general freight. Loading in the woods, soft ground, overhanging limbs and entering highways from logging roads drive losses. Make sure the application says you haul logs, and how much.
What log and East Texas haulers should check
- Liability limits. A log truck pulling onto a highway in front of a car is a serious loss. Many timber buyers and mills ask for $1,000,000 auto liability. See truck liability insurance and trucking umbrella insurance.
- Physical damage on older equipment. Many log trucks and trailers are older and hard to value. See stated amount vs actual cash value.
- Cargo. Logs are low value per load and often uninsured cargo, but chips, lumber and finished wood products may need motor truck cargo coverage.
- Employees. Texas does not require most private employers to carry workers' compensation, but many mills and contractors require it in their contracts. See do Texas trucking companies need workers comp and trucking workers comp in Texas.
Runs into Louisiana
I-20 puts Shreveport about an hour and a half east of Tyler, and many East Texas loads, timber included, deliver to Louisiana mills and terminals. A for-hire truck that crosses into Louisiana is in interstate commerce, so the carrier needs FMCSA authority and a BMC-91X, and most interstate carriers register under UCR. Texas-only carriers file a Form E with TxDMV instead.
When a mill or broker rejects your certificate, the cause is usually a limit, an endorsement or a name mismatch. See carrier packet insurance rejected.
Oil and gas around Tyler
The RRC places Smith County in District 06, administered from Henderson. The Haynesville/Bossier Shale counties the RRC lists include Gregg, Rusk, Harrison and Panola, all east of Tyler, and the RRC describes the productive interval as more than 10,000 feet below the surface. In July 2026, District 06 issued 44 permits to drill new holes and recorded 22 new gas completions.
Haynesville activity means frac sand, water and equipment hauling on East Texas roads. Those loads carry pollution and MSA requirements. See oilfield trucking insurance and Longview trucking insurance.
Deer are the other constant East Texas risk. Animal strikes at dawn and dusk on two-lane highways are common physical damage claims. See truck physical damage insurance.
Common questions
Do I need cargo insurance to haul logs?
Often logs are hauled without cargo coverage because the load value is low and the mill or timber buyer may not require it. If you haul lumber, chips or finished wood products for hire, cargo coverage is more likely to be required. Check each contract.
Can I use non-CDL or new drivers on a log truck?
A truck with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs or more requires a CDL. Whether a new CDL driver is acceptable is up to the underwriter, and many have minimum experience rules. See our page on new CDL drivers.
Is East Texas oilfield hauling rated like Permian hauling?
The coverage questions are the same: pollution, MSA requirements and lease-road exposure. Underwriters will look at what you haul, how far, and your loss history in either region.
