Look up a DOT number the way an underwriter does
Before quoting a trucking account, an underwriter pulls the carrier's public FMCSA record. Enter a USDOT or MC number to see the same picture: authority, insurance filings, fleet, inspections and out-of-service rates, crashes and safety rating, with a plain-English note on what stands out. Free, no sign-up.
What each section means for your insurance
Authority and USDOT status. Whether the USDOT number is active and whether common or contract authority is active. Interstate for-hire authority stays active only while a liability filing is on file, which is why a lapse in coverage can turn into a revocation. See how FMCSA and TxDMV filings work.
MCS-150 date and mileage. The MCS-150 is the carrier's self-reported census: units, drivers, mileage, cargo. It has to be updated at least every 24 months, and underwriters compare it to the application. See what the MCS-150 biennial update is.
Insurance on file. The BMC-91X filing is the insurer's proof to FMCSA that liability coverage is in force, along with the amount and any pending cancellation. Brokers' onboarding checks read the same record. See what a BMC-91X filing is.
Inspections and out-of-service rates. Roadside inspections from the last 24 months, and the share that ended with a vehicle or driver placed out of service. Underwriters compare those rates to FMCSA's published national averages. See what an out-of-service rate is.
Crashes and safety rating. State-reported crashes (with no finding of fault) and any rating from a federal compliance review. Most carriers are not rated. Inspection and crash history also feed the CSA scores some underwriters check. See how CSA scores affect truck insurance.
Everything here comes from FMCSA's public datasets, refreshed by FMCSA on its own schedule. It does not show Texas intrastate Form E filings (those are with TxDMV), CSA BASIC percentiles, or your loss runs, all of which an underwriter also weighs.
